چکیده

The masses of central supermassive black holes in a soft X-ray selected sample of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are estimated by some different methods to test their theoretical models. Apart from the methods using the Hβ linewidth and the [O III] linewidth, soft X-ray excess as a prominent character of NLS1s is used to estimate the black hole masses. The virial mass derived from the Hβ linewidth assuming random orbits of broad-line reigns (BLRs) is consistent with that from the soft X-ray bump luminosity for NLS1s but with a larger scatter. The virial black hole masses showed that most of NLS1s are in the super-Eddington accretion state while most of broad-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (BLS1s) are not. We found that the black hole mass estimated from [O III] linewidth is not in agreement with above two methods. Using the Eddington limit relation for the super-Eddington accretion suggested by Wang (2004), we found that there are 16 NLS1s satisfied with this Eddington limit relation. The masses of these 16 NLS1s derived from X-ray luminosity are systematically larger than that from Hβ linewidth assuming random BLRs orbits. If the mass derived from X-ray luminosity is true, the mean disk inclination to the line of sight in these 16 NLS1s is about 17◦, which provided new support for the pole-on orientation effect in NLS1s.

Black hole masses from power density spectra: determinations and consequences

We show that the X-ray power density spectra do not simply scale linearly with the mass of the black hole over many decades. Nevertheless, the high frequency tail of the power density spectrum can be successfully used for determination of the black hole mass in an AGN if another AGN is used as a reference. We determine the masses of the black holes in 6 Broad Line Seyfert 1 galaxies, 5 Narrow L...

Narrow Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies and the Evolution of Galaxies & Active Galaxies

Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are intriguing due to their continuum as well as emission line properties. The observed peculiar properties of the NLS1s are believed to be due to accretion rate close to Eddington limit. As a consequence, for a given luminosity, NLS1s have smaller black hole (BH) masses compared to normal Seyfert galaxies. Here we argue that NLS1s might be Seyfert galaxie...

The Unified Model of Active Galactic Nuclei: Ii. Evolutionary Connection

The classical unified model is challenged by the presence of various kinds of Seyfert 2 galaxies. We assemble a sample composed of 243 nearby Seyfert galaxies with redshifts z ≤ 0.05 to test the unification scheme. The sample contains 94 broad line Seyfert 1s (BLS1s), 44 narrow line Seyfert 1s (NLS1s), 36 X-ray absorbed hidden broad line region (BLR) Seyfert 2s (HBLR S2s), 42 X-ray absorbed non...

Black hole masses in NLS 1 galaxies from the X - ray excess variance method

We estimate black hole masses in Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies at the basis of their X-ray excess variance. We apply the standard approach appropriate for Broad Line Seyfert 1 (BLS1) galaxies. In general, we find that the obtained masses are by a factor∼ 20 too small to agree with values obtained from other methods (reverberation, stellar dispersion). However, a small subset of our NLS1...

The Mass Distribution of Black Holes in Bl Lacertae Objects and Evolution of Active Galactic Nuclei

In this Letter, we make an attempt to estimate the masses of black holes and their distributions in BL Lac objects. We show the mass of black hole MBH ∝ ν −13/12 pk L 3/8 pk , where νpk and Lpk are the peak frequency and luminosity in the first bump of continuum, respectively. We find there are two populations of black hole masses in BL Lacs: the first has a lower-mass peak centred at ∼ 7.0× 10...
